Travel Contract Tips: Set up for Success

  1. So you’re thinking about taking a new nursing contract in a hospital or facility?  Well as we discussed last week, it’s very important to know your contract.  Especially what penalties you are  subject to. Here are a few things to consider to ensure you are set up for success.
  2.  What’s included in your contract?  Is it a travel contract, and does it include housing, a housing allowance and or housing assistance.  If it’s local does it include mileage or any perks for meals, incidentals, or bonus.  While local contracts typically don’t, it never hurts to ask.
  3. When do you get your first paycheck and how often do you get paid after that?  This is very important for life planning of course.  Don’t just assume your paycheck is weekly or biweekly.  Be sure to ask if it is not covered in your discussions and clear in your contract.
  4. What initial expenses will you incur and is there any support or assistance with this expense.  Local contracts typically carry no expense outside of normal day to day of gas and meals.  Travel contracts are much different. As a travel you will most likely be responsible to cover all initial expenses, including:
    • The cost to drive to location
    • Initial housing cost including any deposits
    • New scrubs if you don’t have the right colors

This is why it’s important to know what’s included in your contract.  If traveling you will have initial costs, and it’s important to know what any of these costs will be provided or reimbursed as a part of your contract.
