So what separates a good travel nurse from a not so good travel nurse and why is this important? The work life of a travel nurse differs slightly from regular staff. The travel nurse is the first and last line of defense within a facility or unit. Where there are pressing needs and staff retention concerns, the travel or contract nurse is the go to person. So what separates a good travel nurse from a not so good travel nurse? Well there are questions to ask to answer that question.

1. Are you flexible to cover the need? Great travel nurses are flexible and not only rotate to the need, they expect and look forward to doing so. Flexibility is the number difference maker in determining a great travel nurse from a not so great one.

2. How are your management skills? Not only with people but with yourself and your job duties. Are you a great communicator that others respond well to? Are you often late or are you always early? Do you often make small mistakes that impact coworkers and patients? How do patients like you? People, time and work management skills are vital to be a great travel contract nurse. The best part is if you lack in any area you can work to improve.

3. How is your commitment level? What most contract and travel nurses lose sight of most often is their contract. Every contract clearly outlines job duties and responsibilities, including time off policies. A great nurse understands their contract, their responsibilities and their commitment and shows up to work daily scheduled, using their days of for fun or reenergizing. They only call out when they are sick to the point that they are threat to others and or themselves, and they complete their contract even if they are in an uncomfortable work environment. Great nurses don’t quit.
